Beyond the Standard Exam

What we look for that others may miss.

After a car accident the ER usually rules out the worst-case emergencies and sends you home, and many providers stop at "rest and ibuprofen." Real injuries hide in the gaps. These are the things we specifically test for that often go undetected.

01 Imaging

Ligament instability

Motion-study X-rays (flexion, extension, and lateral bending views) reveal damaged or stretched neck ligaments that standard static films miss. Untreated ligament injury is one of the leading causes of chronic post-accident pain.

02 Neuro

Concussion screen (SWAY in-office)

We use the SWAY concussion protocol, a validated balance and neurocognitive screen, right in the office to objectively check for concussion after a crash. Many post-accident concussions are missed because the ER never tested cognition, balance, or reaction time.

03 Imaging

Disc & spinal cord injuries

When the exam suggests a disc herniation, nerve root involvement, or possible cord injury, we coordinate an MRI. These injuries do not show on X-ray and can completely change the right course of care.

04 Spine

Upper cervical (C1/C2) involvement

A common driver of post-accident headaches, dizziness, and brain fog. The upper cervical spine is rarely evaluated in detail at the ER or in standard urgent care, and missing it is a common reason patients stay symptomatic.

05 Spine

Loss of cervical curve

Even minor collisions can flatten or reverse the natural curve of the neck, which accelerates degeneration over time. We measure curve angles on lateral imaging and track them over the course of care.

06 Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches vs. migraine

Many post-accident headaches originate at the upper cervical spine, not in the head itself. They are routinely misdiagnosed as tension headaches or migraines and treated with medication that does not address the root.

07 Whiplash

Whiplash-associated disorder grading

A formal clinical classification of whiplash severity (WAD I–IV) that informs the care plan, activity restrictions, and prognosis. Often skipped by providers without specific training in motor-vehicle injury.

08 Neuro

Nerve root irritation patterns

Subtle radiculopathy, the pattern of weakness, reflex change, or sensory loss that points to a specific nerve root, is easy to miss without a careful neurological and orthopedic exam. We test for it directly.

What to Watch For

Common symptoms after a collision.

Neck pain after a car accident
Often the first symptom, and one of the most common after a rear-end or side-impact collision. Can develop within hours or up to 72 hours later.
Headaches after a car accident
Post-accident headaches frequently originate in the upper cervical spine and base of the skull, not from head contact alone.
Upper back tension
The muscles, joints, and spinal segments of the upper back absorb significant force during a collision and often need evaluation.
Back pain after a car accident
Even low-speed collisions can cause lumbar stress. Low back pain after an accident deserves a careful structural exam.
Numbness or tingling after a crash
Radiating pain, tingling, or numbness into the arms or hands after a crash may indicate cervical nerve involvement that needs assessment.
Dizziness or brain fog after an accident
Dizziness, balance changes, and difficulty concentrating after a collision can be linked to upper cervical spine stress and warrant prompt evaluation.
No pain yet
If you were in an accident and feel fine right now, that does not mean nothing happened. Early evaluation gives you a clear baseline before symptoms develop.
Whiplash Care

Whiplash chiropractor in Gallatin & Hendersonville.

Whiplash happens when the head and neck are forced rapidly forward and back, stressing the soft tissue, ligaments, and joints of the cervical spine. It is the most common injury after a rear-end collision, and it does not require a high-speed crash to occur. Symptoms can include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, jaw discomfort, dizziness, and pain that radiates into the shoulders or arms, and they may not appear until 24 to 72 hours after the accident.

Early chiropractic evaluation matters with whiplash because untreated soft-tissue injuries can develop into chronic neck pain, restricted range of motion, and recurring headaches. We start with a focused exam and digital X-rays to rule out structural injury and identify the joints and segments under the most stress.

From there we build a specific care plan to restore motion, reduce inflammation, and address the underlying spinal stress, so the injury heals fully rather than becoming a long-term problem.

Our Approach After an Accident

A specific, documented evaluation from day one.

We do not use a generic post-accident protocol. We evaluate your body specifically, based on the mechanics of the collision, your symptoms, and what the exam reveals.

1
Accident history and symptom timeline
We document the collision details, when symptoms started, and how they have progressed, all of which matters for your records.
2
Full chiropractic examination
Spinal, neurological, and orthopedic testing to identify which structures were stressed and how severely.
3
Digital X-rays
Objective imaging that documents spinal alignment and structural integrity, and can be used to track your progress over time.
4
Specific care plan and clear documentation
Your care is built around your findings. Tailored to your situation. All findings are clearly documented from day one.

"Pain matters, but pain does not always tell the full story. After an accident, we look deeper, so you have a clear record of what happened and a plan that addresses the root of the problem."

Why You Should Not Wait

The impact does not always hurt right away.

After a car accident, many people walk away feeling okay, only for neck pain, stiffness, headaches, or back pain to appear days or even weeks later. This is especially common with whiplash-type injuries, where the soft tissue and spinal structures are stressed but symptoms are delayed.

Even more important: a neck injury that gets shrugged off in the moment can quietly drive significant spinal degeneration years down the road. Untreated post-accident damage to the cervical spine often shows up later as chronic neck pain, recurring headaches, restricted range of motion, and accelerated arthritic changes on imaging. By the time it becomes a daily problem it is much harder to reverse.

Getting evaluated quickly matters. Early documentation of your injuries, through a focused chiropractic exam and digital X-rays, creates an objective record of what the accident did to your body. This protects you medically and legally, and it gives you the chance to address the injury while it is still recent.

At Life Charge Chiropractic, we work with patients after auto accidents to provide a clear, specific, and well-documented care plan from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Auto accident chiropractic FAQ.

How soon should I see a chiropractor after a car accident?
As soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours. Whiplash and other soft-tissue injuries often have delayed onset, with neck pain, stiffness, and headaches showing up days after the collision. Early evaluation creates a documented baseline and lets us address injuries before they become chronic.
Does auto insurance cover chiropractic care?
In most cases, yes. Tennessee auto insurance policies often include MedPay or bodily injury coverage that pays for chiropractic care after an accident. We work directly with your auto insurance and the at-fault driver's insurance, and we can also accept personal injury liens when an attorney is involved.
What is MedPay and do you accept it?
MedPay (Medical Payments coverage) is an optional part of an auto insurance policy that pays for medical expenses after a crash, regardless of who was at fault. Yes, we accept MedPay, and in many cases it covers chiropractic care with no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.
Can a chiropractor treat whiplash?
Yes. Whiplash is one of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care after a car accident. We perform a focused exam and digital X-rays, then build a specific care plan to restore range of motion, reduce inflammation, and address the underlying spinal stress.
I do not feel hurt after my accident. Should I still get checked?
Yes. Many post-accident injuries take 24 to 72 hours, sometimes longer, to produce symptoms, and minor neck injuries that get shrugged off in the moment can lead to significant spinal degeneration years later. An early exam establishes a baseline of your spinal alignment and protects you medically and legally if symptoms develop.
Do I need a referral or an attorney to come in?
No. You can come in directly, no referral required. If you are working with an attorney we are happy to coordinate documentation, and if you are not we can still help you understand your insurance options before care begins.
