Spring in Tennessee means more time outside—golf rounds, yard work, gardening, and weekend projects. We love seeing patients get active again, but this is also one of the most common times we see back pain flare up.
The good news: most spring back injuries are preventable with a few simple habits.
Why spring activities trigger back pain
After a less-active winter, people often jump straight into high-volume movement. That usually means:
- Twisting and rotating without warming up first
- Lifting with the back instead of the hips and legs
- Long periods of bending during gardening or cleanup
- Trying to do “all the chores” in one day
Your body can handle activity—but it does better with preparation and consistency.
5 ways to prevent spring back flare-ups
1) Warm up before you work or play
Take 5–10 minutes before golf or yard work to do light walking and gentle mobility for hips, mid-back, and shoulders. A little prep can make a big difference.
2) Break up long activity blocks
Instead of two hours nonstop, work in shorter rounds with quick breaks. Even 2–3 minutes of standing tall and moving around helps reduce strain.
3) Use hip hinge mechanics when lifting
When lifting bags of mulch, tools, or boxes, bend through your hips and knees, keep the load close, and avoid twisting while carrying.
4) Build up gradually
If it’s your first full golf round or first heavy yard day in months, pace yourself. Increase time and intensity week to week—not all at once.
5) Don’t ignore “warning pain”
Stiffness is one thing. Sharp pain, radiating pain, or pain that lingers for days is different. Getting checked early can prevent a minor issue from becoming a bigger one.
Golf-specific tips
- Do a short warm-up before your first swing
- Start with controlled swings, then build speed
- Walk when possible, but keep posture tall between shots
- Hydrate—muscles fatigue faster when dehydrated
Yard work and gardening tips
- Alternate tasks (raking, lifting, trimming) to avoid repetitive strain
- Use kneeling pads and long-handled tools when possible
- Avoid prolonged bent-over positions
- Stop before your form breaks down
